Maintenance

Prevention
If your gates, railings and fences are properly cared for, you should receive a lifetime of use from them. Usually damage or corrosion affects the base of the post where it is set in the ground and is noticeable by bulging.

One of the most common problems is when rust occurs through the leaking of water within the framework and causes internal corrosion. If water freezes within the post during winter it will expand and could cause serious damage. If the steel then breaks during this expansion then the post will need repairing.

To receive maximum life expectancy then carry out the following at least yearly.

  1. Inspect all areas. If there is rust present then scrape it away using a wire brush or sand it down. Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly dry before applying a rust-inhibiting primer, followed by a finishing coat.
  2. Pay special attention to the bottom of posts. If there are any signs of bulging, you should give us a call to repair or replace the post. Bulging is a sign that water has entered the post. Wood is very receptive to damp or rot so regular painting or staining is required and the base will need careful inspection.
  3. Check for the presence of cracks or crazing around the concrete base of the posts, if any cracks are present then water ingress will occur and any freezing will cause damage / weakening.
  4. Make regularly checks of  your posts after it rains or snows to ensure water is not settling around posts.
